AFCON 2025: Super Eagles trio make team of the tournament

Striker Victor Osimhen, winger Ademola Lookman, and defender Calvin Bassey have been chosen for the official 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Team of the Tournament following their outstanding performances at the tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) picks this team after the tournament to honour the best individual players. This year’s team is mostly made up of players from the two finalists, champion Senegal and host Morocco, who each have four players in the team.

For Nigeria, this selection is a strong reminder of what might have been. The Super Eagles finished in third place after losing to Morocco in a penalty shootout during the semi-finals. The selection of three of their players shows they had some of the top talent in the tournament.

Senegal’s team includes their star forward Sadio Mané, who was also named Player of the Tournament. Morocco’s selections feature their goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who won the award for best goalkeeper, and striker Brahim Díaz, who scored the most goals to win the Golden Boot.

The players were chosen by CAF's Technical Study Group, a team of experts who watch all the games. They use video footage, live data, and statistics to decide which players had the biggest impact and best performances.

Despite not winning the trophy, the inclusion of Osimhen, Lookman, and Bassey gives Nigerian football fans something to celebrate from a tournament that ended with a heartbreaking semi-final loss.
