Panama defender Jiovany Ramos has acknowledged the challenge posed by Ghana ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the Black Stars as a physically strong and aggressive side.

The centre-back made the remarks as Panama continued preparations for Wednesday's Group L clash against Ghana at Toronto Stadium.

Speaking to the media before Sunday's training session, Ramos stressed the importance of discipline and concentration if Panama are to make a positive start to their World Cup campaign.

"Ghana is a very strong, aggressive team, but we have to play our game, stay focused, well-positioned, with compact lines, because we know that at any moment our goal can come," Ramos said.

The defender believes maintaining tactical discipline throughout the 90 minutes will be crucial against a Ghanaian side packed with quality players and renowned for their physical intensity.

Ramos noted that Panama must remain committed to the game plan prepared by the coaching staff while looking for opportunities to hurt their African opponents.

The 28-year-old also reflected on his personal journey to the World Cup, revealing how a difficult period in his career motivated him to work harder and earn a place in Panama's 26-man squad for the tournament.

"Everything in life happens for a reason," Ramos explained.

"I had a bit of a slump, I went back to Panama, and after that, I decided to work harder because I knew what was coming. I told myself I had to work twice as hard to achieve it and I did."

The defender, who has scored twice in Panama's last four matches, is now determined to make the most of his World Cup opportunity.

"Now I want to have a good World Cup so that I can have good things in life," he added.

Panama enter the tournament with growing confidence after completing a week of preparations in Canada.

The return of influential midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla to ball work has also provided a significant boost ahead of their highly anticipated opener against Ghana.

With the countdown to kick-off nearing its end, Ramos and his teammates remain focused on delivering a strong performance when Panama make their World Cup debut in Toronto on Wednesday.
