Ghana’s most capped player, Andre Ayew, marked his long-awaited return to competitive football after making his debut for NAC Breda in a hard-fought 0-0 draw away at FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie.

The experienced forward was introduced in the 57th minute of the round 18 encounter at the Euroborg Stadium, replacing French youngster Moussa Soumano, as NAC Breda pushed for a late breakthrough.

The appearance ended a lengthy spell on the sidelines for Ayew, who had been without competitive action since May 2025.

Ayew, 36, recently joined the Yellow-Blacks on a short-term contract with an option to extend, following several weeks of training with the squad.

Despite limited preparation time, the former Ghana captain delivered a respectable showing in his 33-minute cameo, registering 20 touches, one shot, one successful dribble, and winning several ground and aerial duels as he added experience and composure to NAC’s attacking play.

The match also featured a strong Ghanaian presence, with Ayew sharing the pitch with fellow countrymen Denis Odoi and Kamal Sowah, both of NAC, in a tightly contested encounter.

The result leaves NAC still battling in the relegation zone, sitting 17th on the Eredivisie table with 14 points after 18 matches.

They will next turn their attention to a crucial home fixture against NEC Nijmegen at the Rat Verlegh Stadion, where Ayew will be hoping to earn more minutes and possibly a first start.

The return to action is a significant step for Ayew as he aims to regain full match sharpness and put himself back in contention for a Black Stars call-up ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
