Daniel Kofi Kyereh targets 2026 World Cup return after long injury layoff
· GhanaSoccernetGhana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has set his sights on a return to the global stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as he continues his recovery from a long-term injury.
The SC Freiburg midfielder has been sidelined for months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which significantly disrupted his progress. He recently made his return to action, featuring for Freiburg’s U23 side as he gradually works his way back to full fitness.
Despite limited game time so far, the 30-year-old remains optimistic about his chances of representing Ghana at the tournament in Mexico, Canada and the United States.
"Yes, I do," Kyereh told Joy Sports when asked if he wanted to play at the World Cup. "That is another dream and goal I am striving for. I believe in it.'
He acknowledged the need for patience and honesty about his physical condition as he continues rehabilitation.
"I need to be honest with myself, but until then, I have some weeks or months to work on getting in the best shape I can be. My aim is that before the World Cup, I can have one or two games where I can play the full minutes available. I believe I can do it and get in shape for the World Cup."
Kyereh, however, stressed that a potential call-up will depend on more than just his personal ambitions.
"On the other hand, I need to be honest with myself and see every day how I am feeling because I don't want to go to the World Cup just to be a part of it or just have it on my CV that I have been to another World Cup if I cannot really help the team or have the impact like before," he continued.
"At the end of the day, I am not the one who decides. I can just do what I can and leave the rest to the decisionmakers."
The former World Cup squad member in 2022 has earned 18 caps for the Black Stars since his debut and has featured in two major international tournaments.
