Antoine Semenyo becomes second player to rise from non-league to Champions League debut

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has become only the second player to rise from non-league football through all four professional divisions in England before appearing in the UEFA Champions League.

The 26-year-old featured for Manchester City in their 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday night.

Former Republic of Ireland defender Steve Finnan is the only other player known to have followed a similar path. Finnan played for clubs including Welling United, Birmingham City, Notts County, Fulham, Liverpool and Portsmouth during his career.

Semenyo’s appearance in Europe’s top club competition marks another step in his steady rise through the English football system. Since joining Manchester City from Bournemouth in January, the Ghana international has made a strong start, scoring seven goals in 13 appearances.

Born in London, Semenyo began his professional journey with Bristol City, signing his first contract at the age of 17.

He gained experience through loan spells at Bath City, Newport County and Sunderland as he worked his way up the English football ladder.

Semenyo later established himself at Bristol City before earning a move to Bournemouth in 2023. His form with the Cherries eventually secured his transfer to Manchester City.

Although his Champions League debut ended in defeat, the milestone reflects the forward’s remarkable journey through English football.
