I would not recommend appointing a Ghanaian coach – Ernest Thompson advises GFA

Former Black Stars Management Committee member Ernest Thompson has advised the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports against appointing a local coach as a replacement for Otto Addo, insisting the role should go to an experienced foreign tactician.

Speaking on Joy FM, Thompson argued that Ghanaian coaches have historically struggled to maintain authority within the national team setup and resist external interference.

"Looking at where we are now after parting ways with Otto Addo, we need to go for the best. For the next six months, I would not recommend appointing a Ghanaian coach," he said.

"From my experience, they have not been able to effectively control their camp. We need a coach in the mould of a Mariano Barreto or Milovan Rajevac."

Thompson also cast doubt on Kwesi Appiah's suitability for a return, questioning his ability to command the authority required at the highest level.

"I don't think Kwesi Appiah has the firmness needed to control this team. At this stage, we are dealing with high stakes—the World Cup is not a playground like the Africa Cup of Nations."

He pointed to bold decisions made by top football nations as examples Ghana should follow.

"Look at countries like England and Brazil; they've made bold decisions when necessary. We need a coach with strong authority, character, and a solid technical team behind him."

The GFA is expected to announce a new head coach within the week as preparations continue ahead of the Black Stars' friendly against Mexico in May. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama for the 2026 World Cup.
