Fred Pappoe praises Carlos Queiroz’s calm and authority after Black Stars unveiling
· GhanaSoccernetFormer Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, has expressed confidence in new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, highlighting the Portuguese trainer’s composure and experience following his official unveiling in Accra.
Speaking to SuperSport after the unveiling of the 73-year-old, Pappoe said Queiroz made a strong first impression, describing him as a calm and measured figure with a clear understanding of the task ahead.
"I think, generally, he came across as calm and mature, someone who has been around and knows his stuff," he said.
Pappoe also noted that the former Real Madrid and Iran coach struck the right balance between confidence and realism, acknowledging Ghana’s current challenges while projecting belief in the team’s potential.
"He showed a lot of confidence in the task ahead without disrespecting the situation we find ourselves in."
Pappoe further emphasised Queiroz’s pragmatic approach, revealing that the veteran coach has already outlined the need for discipline and proper preparation as Ghana targets a strong showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"He appears to be a realistic person and measured, even with the expectation, but very clear and letting us know that it is doable, whatever it is, but then we have to do the right things first, which he mentioned that we will be prepared to do," he added.
Queiroz, a former Real Madrid head coach, has been handed a four-month deal to lead the Black Stars to the 2026 World Cup this summer, which will be hosted across the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, face a stern test in Group L, where they will come up against England, Croatia and Panama.
The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
After disappointing group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, expectations are mounting for a stronger performance this time, with Queiroz charged with guiding the four-time African champions beyond the early stages.
