The Ghana Premier League (GPL) has been placed at the bottom of the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) list of the world’s top 100 men’s football leagues in the latest annual ranking.

The assessment, which covers performance between January 1 and December 31, 2025, saw the GPL collect just 155.75 points, positioning it lowest among leagues featured in the global standings.

The IFFHS ranking is derived from a weighted points system that takes into account league results domestically and the performance of clubs in continental competitions during the assessed period.

The methodology aims to provide an objective measure of relative league strength, with league champions and clubs accruing points based on match results and international performance.

For Ghana, the outcome represents a significant drop in standing. At the end of 2024, the league was ranked 92nd worldwide, and while not among the elite, that placement suggested greater competitiveness than the new position indicates.

Despite its deep footballing roots and historical success in nurturing talent, the GPL trails not only major African leagues but also those from smaller footballing nations. Guatemala (65th), Nicaragua (55th), Panama (98th) and Venezuela (67th) were all ranked above Ghana in the latest list.

Across the African continent, leagues in Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Algeria and Tunisia occupy the region’s top five spots in the global ranking.

These leagues benefit from stronger domestic competition and more consistent performances by clubs in continental tournaments.
