WAFCON 2024: We’re in a great position – Björkegren ahead of Tanzania showdown
· GhanaSoccernetBlack Queens head coach Kim Bjorkegren remains confident in his side’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) despite a challenging start to the tournament.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s final Group C clash against Tanzania, the Swedish coach struck an optimistic tone, insisting the team is still well placed to advance.
“I think we are in a great position,” Bjorkegren said. “We only need to win one game to play in the quarterfinal. We can be second or third in the group. I still believe in the players, even if we have one point going into this game.”
Ghana must beat Tanzania on Monday to keep their WAFCON hopes alive after collecting just one point from their opening two matches, a 2-0 loss to South Africa and a 1-1 draw with Mali. The Black Queens currently sit bottom of Group C alongside Tanzania, who also have one point.
With South Africa and Mali on four points each, a win could still see Ghana qualify either as group runners-up or one of the best third-placed teams.
The crunch tie is scheduled for 19:00 GMT on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane.
