World Cup 2026: Thomas Partey set for Canadian court appeal as Ghana awaits verdict ahead of Panama clash
· GhanaSoccernetGhana midfielder Thomas Partey is expected to appear before a Canadian Federal Court on Tuesday in a bid to overturn a visa denial that has prevented him from joining the Black Stars ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The hearing, scheduled for 13:00 GMT, comes after Canadian authorities refused the 33-year-old entry into the country due to ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom.
Partey has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of assault involving four women over alleged incidents said to have occurred between 2020 and 2022. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, with a trial set to take place later this year.
Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, confirmed that the former Arsenal midfielder will challenge the decision in court, expressing confidence that the ruling could be reversed.
According to Adams, both the Government of Ghana and the country's diplomatic mission in Canada have been supporting Partey's efforts to secure entry into the North American nation in time for Ghana's World Cup campaign.
The Black Stars vice-captain was absent from the Ghana squad that arrived in Toronto on Monday to complete preparations for Wednesday's Group L opener against Panama at BMO Field.
Partey's absence has been a major talking point ahead of the tournament, with the experienced midfielder considered a key figure in coach Carlos Queiroz's plans.
Should the court rule in his favour, Partey is expected to travel to Toronto immediately and could become available for selection for the clash against Panama.
Ghana will be seeking a strong start to their World Cup journey before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. The four-time African champions will then conclude their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 27.
