FIFA rules out changes to World Cup schedule despite Iran's request to move matches to Mexico
· GhanaSoccernetFIFA has confirmed that the schedule for the 2026 World Cup remains unchanged, despite efforts by Iran to relocate their group stage matches to Mexico amid escalating conflict with the United States.
Iran, drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt, are scheduled to play their matches in Los Angeles and Seattle. However, recent comments from US President Donald Trump have cast doubt on the safety of the Iranian delegation.
"The Iran national soccer team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don't believe it is appropriate that they be there for their own life and safety," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, referencing the ongoing military tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
In response, Iranian officials have pushed for a change of venue. A statement attributed to Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj made their position clear.
"When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America. We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran's matches in the World Cup in Mexico."
But FIFA has pushed back against any suggestion of imminent changes. A spokesperson confirmed that the governing body remains in regular contact with all participating nations, including Iran, but stressed that the tournament schedule stands as announced.
FIFA is looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule released on December 6, 2025.
With less than three months until kickoff, any relocation would present significant logistical challenges. For now, Iran's matches remain in the US.
