Ghana star Andre Ayew expressed his delight after making his long-awaited return to competitive football in NAC Breda's 0-0 draw away to FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie.

The 36-year-old Black Stars legend, who spent the first half of the season without a club, came off the bench to play 33 minutes in a hard-fought encounter on Saturday. Following the match, Ayew shared his happiness at being back on the pitch and his immediate focus for his new chapter.

"It's good to be here," an elated Ayew told the club's media. "A new competition for me, but one with the necessary prestige."

While overjoyed to be playing again, the veteran striker was quick to outline his practical goals, emphasising the need for adaptation and fitness. "I also need to get back to 100 per cent fitness and get used to my teammates and our playing style," he stated, acknowledging the work ahead to integrate fully with the squad.

Ayew also praised the team's collective effort, which earned a valuable point in their fight for Eredivisie survival. "We showed fighting spirit and determination, and we need to keep it up. Everything to keep NAC in the Eredivisie," he said.

His debut marks the beginning of a crucial six-month period for the forward, who is aiming to contribute significantly to NAC Breda's campaign while also building a case for a potential return to the Ghana national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The club's next match is at home against NEC on Saturday, January 17.
