VIDEO: Watch highlights as Mexico beat Ghana in World Cup warm-up friendly
· GhanaSoccernetMexico secured a 2-0 victory over Ghana in an international World Cup warm-up match in Puebla, scoring once in each half to maintain control throughout the encounter.
Despite the defeat, the Black Stars, featuring several new faces, showed determination and produced a spirited performance against El Tri.
Mexico made their intentions clear early at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc, taking the lead after Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare misjudged a situation, allowing Brian Gutierrez to pounce and score. The hosts, featuring a squad largely built around home-based players, dictated the tempo for most of the first half and went into the break deservedly 1-0 up.
Asare quickly recovered from his error, producing several important saves to keep Ghana in the contest and prevent Mexico from stretching their advantage before halftime. The Black Stars, who named a youthful team packed with debutants and U-23 players, began to grow into the game after the interval.
Ghana’s best moment came when Sakyi rattled the post during a bright spell that briefly tilted momentum their way. However, Mexico soon reasserted control and doubled their lead in the 54th minute through Guillermo MartÃnez Ayala, whose composed finish effectively killed off Ghana’s hopes of a comeback.
The friendly also doubled as a valuable audition for several Ghanaian newcomers, with Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Solomon Agbesi, Prince Amoako, Rak Sakyi Addo, Medeama midfielder Salim Adams, Joseph Opoku, and Daniel Oduro all making their senior international bows. Ghana will now shift focus to their final pre-World Cup warm-up against Wales as they look to fine-tune preparations for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
