AFCON 2025: Elias Achouri nets brace in Tunisia’s 3-1 triumph over Uganda
· GhanaSoccernetElias Achouri impressed with a top performance for Tunisia on Tuesday night, netting a stunning brace to lead his nation to a 3-1 victory over Uganda in their opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Carthage Eagles made a fast start to the encounter and took the lead inside the opening ten minutes. Hannibal Mejbri’s well-delivered corner caused problems in the Ugandan box, allowing Ellyes Skhiri to rise highest and power a header in off the left post to put Tunisia ahead.
In the exciting Group C encounter, Tunisia continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their advantage five minutes before the break. Ali Abdi found Achouri in space, and the forward produced a moment of quality with a superb first-time strike that flew into the top right corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Achouri struck again midway through the second half to effectively put the contest beyond Uganda’s reach. Alert inside the penalty area, the winger reacted quickest to a rebound and rifled the ball into the right side of the goal to complete his brace and make it 3-0.
Uganda managed to pull one back in stoppage time through Denis Omedi, whose effort from inside the box took a deflection on its way past the goalkeeper.
Unfortunately, it was too late to get back into the game as the Cranes succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at full-time.
The result gives Tunisia a strong start to their AFCON 2025 journey, propelling them to the summit of the Group C standings on the same points (3) with Nigeria in second, but ahead with a superior goal difference.
