Don't consider Kwesi Appiah's reappointment as Otto Addo's successor - Ernest Thompson tells GFA

Former Black Stars Management Committee Member, Ernest Thompson, has kicked against a possible reappointment of Kwesi Appiah as the head coach of the national team following the dismissal of Otto Addo.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is currently searching for a new head coach after Addo was relieved of his duties in the wake of consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany in March.

Appiah, who had two stints with the team, has emerged as one of the favourites to replace the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach ahead of the 2026 World Cup this summer.

However, Mr Thompson beleives Appiah lacks the firmness to control the team.

“I don’t think Kwesi Appiah has the firmness needed to control this team," he told Joy Sports.

"At this stage, we are dealing with high stakes — the World Cup is not a playground like the Africa Cup of Nations.

"Look at countries like England and Brazil; they’ve made bold decisions when necessary. See who they appointed. We need a coach with strong authority, character, and a solid technical team behind him,” he added.

Meanwhile, the GFA is expected to announce a new head coach this month, before the team reassembles in May for a friendly against Mexico, then takes on Wales in their final preparatory game on June 2.

The Black Stars, who are making their fifth appearance at the Mundial, have been paired with Panama, England and Croatia in Group L.
