Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae believes his side’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador has underlined their credentials as genuine contenders at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Elephants made a dream start to their campaign when substitute Amad Diallo struck a late winner in Philadelphia, securing all three points in a tightly contested Group E encounter and extending the team’s impressive run of form.

The victory follows a series of encouraging performances from the African champions, who have continued to build momentum since qualifying for the tournament. Wins over South Korea and Scotland during the March international window, followed by an impressive away triumph against France, had already raised expectations surrounding the team.

For Fae, Sunday’s result was further evidence that Ivory Coast arrived in North America with ambitions that stretch far beyond merely participating.

“We came here with high hopes and big ambitions,” the coach said after the match. “We don’t want to simply be part of the tournament. We want to compete, progress and show what this team is capable of achieving.”

Ivory Coast had to work hard for the victory against an experienced Ecuador side featuring several established stars. The South Americans were marshalled by a defence led by Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Willian Pacho and Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie, while Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo provided protection in front of the back line.

Despite the challenge, the Ivorians remained patient and eventually found the breakthrough when Diallo came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the closing moments.

Fae was particularly pleased with the maturity shown by his youthful squad, which includes highly rated winger Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old continues to attract attention with his fearless performances and is viewed as one of the brightest prospects in African football.

The result has strengthened Ivory Coast’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in the country’s history. Since making their tournament debut in 2006, the Elephants have never advanced beyond the group phase.

Attention now turns to a daunting showdown with four-time world champions Germany, who sent a strong message to the rest of the group by thrashing Curacao 7-1 in their opening fixture.

While acknowledging the quality of the Germans, Fae insists his players will not be intimidated.

“Germany have tremendous experience and world-class players competing at the highest level in Europe,” he said. “Scoring seven goals in their first match shows exactly how dangerous they are.”

However, the Ivory Coast coach made it clear that his team will travel to Toronto with confidence and belief.

“We will go there looking for a win. We respect Germany, but we also believe in our own strengths and qualities. Football is not decided by reputation. It is decided on the pitch.”

A positive result against Germany would put Ivory Coast in a strong position to secure qualification to the knockout rounds with a game to spare, an achievement that would mark a historic milestone for the West African nation.

For now, though, the Elephants are enjoying a winning start and the growing belief that this could be their most successful World Cup campaign yet.
