Hervé Renard is set to become Tunisia's new head coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after the Carthage Eagles' 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation sacked Lamouchi on Monday, just one day after the heavy loss, with Mondher Kebaier initially named as interim coach.

However, Renard is now expected to take charge unless there is a late change of plans.

The former Zambia, Cote d'Ivoire and Morocco coach has reportedly been offered the opportunity to lead Tunisia for the remainder of the World Cup, as well as a longer-term project beyond the tournament.

Renard's appointment would mark a remarkable return to the World Cup just months after he was dismissed as Saudi Arabia coach before the tournament.

The Frenchman had guided Saudi Arabia through qualification but was relieved of his duties before the finals, seemingly ending his hopes of coaching at the World Cup.

Tunisia are hoping Renard's experience can revive their campaign after the crushing defeat to Sweden left them facing an uphill battle to qualify from Group F.

The North Africans still have two group matches remaining against Japan and the Netherlands and must improve quickly to keep their knockout hopes alive.

An official announcement is expected if negotiations are completed successfully.
