AFCON 2025: Senegal brush aside Benin with a 3-0 triumph to top Group D

The Lions of Teranga went into their final group match on four points, having beaten Botswana 3-0 in their opening match and drawn 1-1 with D.R Congo in their second match.
Keen on winning their group, Senegal put up a spirited performance on the night, securing all three points despite finishing the contest with 10 men.
On the matchday, the victors opened the scoring in the 38th minute through a header from Abdoulaye Seck.
Although the goal was contested by the Benin players over a possible handball in the build-up, a review by referee Samuel Uwikunda cleared the goal, confirming Senegal’s lead before halftime.
After recess, goals from Habib Diallo and Cherif Ndiaye put the match beyond the reach of Benin, as Sadio Mane and his teammates celebrated a statement win at AFCON 2025.
Finishing the group stage with seven points, Senegal are through to the Round 16 stage as winners of Group D.
D.R Congo also finished the campaign with seven points but trailed Senegal on goal difference. They will also play in the Round 16 stage.
Benin, despite finishing third in the group, earned three points and advanced into the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-place teams.
