Co-hosts Mexico became the first nation to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara.

Midfielder Luis Romo scored the only goal in the 50th minute, tapping into an empty net after South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk.

South Korea pushed for an equaliser late on, but goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced two crucial saves, first denying Cho Gue-sung from close range before keeping out Yang Hyun-jun on the rebound. Earlier, captain Son Heung-min had an effort cleared off the line, although the offside flag had already been raised.

The victory gives Javier Aguirre's side six points from two matches, confirms them as Group A winners and guarantees a home Round of 32 tie in Mexico City. It is also the first time Mexico have finished top of a World Cup group since 2002.

Mexico complete their group campaign against Czech Republic, while South Korea face South Africa knowing a positive result should keep their knockout hopes alive.
