Antoine Semenyo wary of Panama threat as Ghana target World Cup progress

Antoine Semenyo has warned against underestimating Panama as Ghana prepare to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, insisting the Black Stars must approach every group game with caution.

Ghana open their tournament against Panama on June 17 in Toronto before facing Croatia and England in what is widely viewed as a difficult Group L.

While much of the attention has centred on the clash with England, Semenyo believes the opening fixture could prove just as decisive.

“It’s a tough group because you can’t underestimate Panama,” he said.

“You think it’s easy, but it’s not that easy. It will be a tough game; they won’t be a pushover.”

The forward is expected to play a leading role for Ghana as they aim to reach the knockout stage, and he made it clear that qualification remains the primary objective.

“Croatia and England are obviously top teams. Trying to get out of the group is what we want essentially, but it’s not going to be easy at all.”

Semenyo, who chose to represent Ghana despite being eligible for England, is preparing for his second World Cup appearance after featuring in Qatar 2022.

“It’s going to be tough, but yeah, I’m looking forward to it,” he added.

Ghana head into the tournament with a squad in transition, and Semenyo acknowledged the challenge of competing at the highest level, particularly with key players unavailable.

Still, the 26-year-old remains focused on delivering for the Black Stars on the global stage as they look to navigate a demanding group and advance beyond the first round.
