French Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse FC have projected that Ghana midfielder Francis Abu will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following an initial assessment of his horrendous injury.

Abu, 24, was in action for the Black Stars of Ghana on Friday when they engaged Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.

In a game Japan cruised to a 2-0 win, the Ghanaian midfielder suffered a broken leg injury in the second half and had to be stretchered off.

In a statement issued by Toulouse FC, the club has disclosed that Francis Abu will spend several months on the sidelines.

The club also believes Abu will not recover in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although the tournament is seven months away.

“Images we hate to see. Selected by Ghana's "Black Stars" for friendly matches against Japan and South Korea, Francis Abu saw his season come to a premature end. Suffering a terrible injury against Japan, our midfielder will be sidelined for several months and will unfortunately miss the 2026 World Cup in the United States... Very sad news indeed,” Toulouse FC said in their statement.

The French club added, “The entire club wishes you a speedy recovery, Abu. Stay strong and come back to us soon; we're all with you during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, the midfielder has been recalled from the Ghana camp in Asia to return to France for medical treatment.
