'We don't have enough options' - Otto Addo justifies Yirenkyi choice at right back
· GhanaSoccernetOtto Addo has justified his continued use of Caleb Yirenkyi at right-back, pointing to a shortage of specialist options in the position, even as Marvin Senaya edges into contention following his recent arrival.
The Black Stars head coach’s explanation comes in the wake of Ghana’s heavy 5-1 loss to Austria, where Yirenkyi endured a difficult outing in an unfamiliar defensive role.
The decision has drawn scrutiny, particularly with calls for Yirenkyi to be restored to his natural midfield position. However, Addo maintained that tactical necessity, rather than preference, has dictated the deployment.
“In his club he has played as a defensive midfielder. We are having problems at that very position [right-back],” he said after the game.
“Caleb jumped into that position. We have a lot of midfielders and our problem is that side. Now we are happy to get Marvin; he’s new to the system so we have to see.
“At the moment, we didn’t have enough options at the right side and we have a lot of options in the midfield…that is why he [Yirenkyi] predominantly plays there.”
Attention now turns to Ghana’s next test against Germany on Monday, where Addo will be under pressure to address defensive frailties and deliver a more cohesive performance.
