Ghana veteran Andre Ayew could be set for a dramatic return to the Black Stars fold after Mohammed Kudus suffered a significant injury setback that threatens his availability for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Thursday that the 25-year-old midfielder has suffered a setback in his recovery from a quad injury sustained in January and will now require further specialist review and potentially surgery.

The news has cast serious doubt over Kudus's participation in the World Cup, with just over two months until Ghana's opener against Panama on June 17.

Kudus has been a cornerstone of Ghana's attack, and his potential absence leaves a creative void in the squad. With the Black Stars still without a permanent head coach following Otto Addo's dismissal after the March friendlies—though an appointment is expected within days—the need for experienced cover has become urgent.

Andre Ayew, Ghana's most capped player, has been on the fringes of the national team since March 2024, with former coach Addo preferring younger options.

However, the 36-year-old has remained active, recently scoring his first goal for Dutch side NAC Breda and showing he can still perform at a competitive level.

Ayew's experience across multiple World Cups and Africa Cup of Nations tournaments could prove invaluable if Kudus is ruled out. His leadership and ability to operate across the forward line make him a logical emergency option for whichever coach takes charge.

While Ayew's return has been a subject of debate among fans and pundits, Kudus's injury setback significantly strengthens the case for his inclusion. The Ghana Football Association is expected to name a new head coach by Monday, and that decision could pave the way for Ayew's recall.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will open their campaign on June 17 in Toronto.
