Andre Ayew cites Ghanaian ties and club vision as key factors behind NAC Breda move
· GhanaSoccernetAndre Ayew has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to join NAC Breda, revealing that the strong Ghanaian presence at the Dutch club played a decisive role in his short-term move to the Eredivisie side.
The former Ghana captain recently signed a six-month deal with NAC Breda following the expiration of his contract at French Ligue 1 outfit Le Havre.
Despite attracting interest from clubs across different continents, Ayew said the project presented by NAC Breda, coupled with the familiar Ghanaian connections within the club, ultimately convinced him to make the move.
“With a big fan base also. This club has a big name,” Ayew explained. “We have players like Matthew Amoah and others who have made their name here. There’s my little brother Kamal here and Denis is also here.”
Ayew pointed to the club’s identity, tradition and passionate supporters as major attractions, noting that NAC Breda’s history with Ghanaian players made the environment feel immediately familiar. Former Ghana international Matthew Amoah remains one of the club’s most iconic figures, having enjoyed a prolific spell between 2007 and 2011 that cemented his status as a fan favourite. Amoah continues to maintain close ties with the club and now plays a technical and advisory role, focusing on the development of attacking players.
The Ghanaian legacy at NAC Breda remains strong. Ayew joins compatriots Kamal Sowah and Denis Odoi, both of whom were members of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, further reinforcing the sense of continuity and connection that influenced his decision.
At 34, Ayew arrives with a clear objective: helping NAC Breda retain their Eredivisie status. The club currently find themselves in a relegation battle, and Ayew believes his experience and leadership can make a difference in the second half of the season.
“I think this is the perfect place when I look at the fan base, when I look at the style of play and everything,” he said. “I looked at everything and yeah, the club showed me a lot of determination and I showed it back. We are going for this six months to make sure the club stays in the top league.”
Ayew made his debut for NAC Breda in a goalless draw away to FC Groningen, coming on in the second half.
