Wayne Rooney's managerial learning curve is proving steep after he learned why he couldn't give interviews following his recent red card.

The Plymouth Argyle boss was sent off during a Championship match against Blackburn earlier in October after voicing his displeasure with Rovers' equaliser. The Manchester United icon was visibly upset over what he believed was a foul leading up to Joe Rankin-Costello's goal at Home Park and was subsequently sent off by referee James Linington.

However, Rooney was taken aback when he discovered he couldn't give post-match interviews as a result of his sending off. Fortunately, PGMOL chief and ex-Premier League referee Howard Webb was available to clarify why this was the case on the latest episode of The Overlap.

"It's meant to protect the coach as well," said Webb in response to Rooney's suggestion the rule is meant to shield officials from public criticism. Despite this explanation, 'Wazza' continued to question the policy, arguing that as a fan, he would want to hear from the coach after such a development.

Webb continued: "So there was a working group set up called the 'Participant Behaviour Working Group', and on there sat various representatives from different groups, including the League Managers Association. And collectively - I don't know what the exact view of the LMA was - collectively, they decided if the coach is sent off, there'll be no media for that coach.

"I appreciate some coaches want to do it, but I think it was to protect the coach from saying something in the heat of the moment they might regret later."

Both Rooney and former United team-mate Roy Keane seemed to agree with the decision, and the latter voiced some approval in giving bosses time to "cool down" before facing the press. Rooney now faces a touchline suspension for Plymouth's match against Cardiff City on Saturday.

The Pilgrims boss was renowned as something of a hothead as a player and received eight red cards for club and country. Thanks to Morgan Whittaker's 97th-minute winner against Blackburn, however, the impact of this dismissal has so far been minimal.
