Callum Wright joins Wigan Athletic from Plymouth Argyle on loan
by Chris Errington · PlymouthLiveCallum Wright has become the latest player to make a move away from Plymouth Argyle this summer after joining League One rivals Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.
The 25-year-old was signed by Argyle from Blackpool in January 2023 on a contract until the summer of 2026 so with him switching to Wigan for the forthcoming season there is the strong possibility he has played his last game for the Pilgrims.
Merseyside-born Wright said to Wigan's official website: "It's an amazing football club. I have known about Wigan Athletic all of my life, and I’m excited to be here. As soon as the Gaffer (Ryan Lowe) got in touch with me, I wanted to come here. It made sense - coming back up north and trying to kick on again.
"I think the Gaffer’s system really suits me to a tee - and what he expects from his players is exactly what I will bring to the team. Hopefully, I can settle in quickly and crack on. At this level, I have got lots of goals and assists over the seasons, and I want to do that here and get Wigan bouncing again."
Wright has made a total of 43 starts and 46 substitute appearances for Argyle and scored five goals. He is the third player to be loaned out by the Pilgrims this summer, following Nathanael Ogbeta to Barnsley and Michael Baidoo to Qatari side Umm Salal.
Wigan head coach Ryan Lowe, the former Argyle manager, said: "We have been searching for a goal-scoring midfielder for some time, and Callum fits that profile. We have monitored him for some time, and we are glad he chose us over several other League One clubs.
"Callum has experience in both League One and the Championship and knows what it takes to be successful. He is an extremely creative player who comes alive in the final third, and we're thrilled that Callum will be joining us on our journey."
Gregor Rioch, Wigan's sporting director, added: "I am delighted we have been able to bring Callum to the football club.
"Callum is an exciting, attack-minded player, and I am confident that he will be an excellent addition to our squad. I want to thank Plymouth Argyle for facilitating the move, and wish Callum all the best during his stay at Wigan Athletic."
