Plymouth Argyle fans react as Wiredu signs with the Pilgrims
by Claire Elliott, Plymouth Live readers · PlymouthLivePlymouthLive readers are happy to hear that Fleetwood Town's defender, Brendan Wiredu, is the latest addition to Plymouth Argyle, following an agreement between the two clubs.
The transfer fee for the 25-year-old has not been disclosed but it has been widely reported to be £300,000. Argyle are understood to have beaten off strong competition from League One rivals Rotherham United to bring him to Home Park, while the length of contract he has signed with them has not been revealed.
Born in Tower Hamlets, London, Wiredu began his football journey at Charlton Athletic's Academy. Despite loan spells, he only made six appearances for the Addicks – all in Cup competitions – before moving to Colchester United for an undisclosed fee following a loan spell in Essex. Prior to this, Wiredu had also spent time on loan at Bromley. However, it was with the U's that his career truly took off.
After initially joining on loan in September 2019, he made a total of 75 appearances for the club. In June 2022, he moved again, signing for Fleetwood, who were then in League One. Wiredu made 47 appearances in his first season and 39 in 2023/24 when Fleetwood suffered relegation from the third tier. At the start of the last season, he was appointed club captain and made 37 appearances as the club finished 14th in the fourth tier.
Tom Cleverley said: "Brendan is a great acquisition for us. He is strong, versatile and, as evidenced by the fact he was Fleetwood’s captain, a leader. It is great to have him on board.”
Argyle head of football operations David Fox added: "Brendan is a player we have kept a close eye on, and he is a player who will really suit us as this moment in time. He is at an age where he is experienced, but still has many great years in front of him. We think he will complement us perfectly."
Commenter Viccanada says: “It seems we are making progress, I just hope we see the strikers signed sooner than later.”
Pilgrimgaz is happy: “Brendan Wiredu is a cracking player. He's been filling in at centre back for Fleetwood but I think Argyle will utilise him in his favoured position as a defensive midfielder. I've seen him play against Argyle on a few occasions and he looked like a really accomplished player. Very aggressive and carries the ball well.”
Jmeb86 agrees: “Better!! I like this lad. Shame we are losing Maxi though. But decent signing and a very good price. Thought the club would be paying a bit more than that.”
Pyworthypilgrim adds: “Rome wasn't built in a day - nor a competent, challenging Club side. Patience people!”
PilgrimSean writes: “I don't want to do a disservice to this lad but I really think our recruitment is looking to sign players capable of staying afloat in league 1. We should be looking to sign players capable of playing in the Championship and we should be offering Maxi an improved contract to stay with us and hopefully take us up this year.”
Plymhi replies: “With the departure of Maxi it is sensible to bring in a replacement to strengthen the defence. The defence is the backbone of the team, teams that do not defend well are relegation candidates like Argyle were last season. If a team has a good defence then the rest will take care of itself.”
Ozplym001 thinks: “If bringing in Wiredu, maybe Burrell and one or 2 others is the next phase of pre-season recruitment? If we are raising the overall quality of the squad then that's fine by me. If the final phase is to go after 2 or 3 marquee signings to improve the attack and centre of midfield and then use the loan system to fill any quality gaps as needed, we will be in a very good place to attack the season and push for promotion.”
Intheknow1 agrees: “There’s been a lot of steps backwards, now at last a step forward!”
