Carabao Cup: Embarrassing, stupid red card – Maresca blasts Delap after Wolves win
by Ifreke Inyang · Daily PostChelsea manager, Enzo Maresca, was left fuming at full time after Liam Delap received a red card, in their 4-3 win over Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Delap was only making a return from a hamstring injury in the game.
The Blues had taken a 3-0 lead, thanks to goals from Andrey Santos, Tyrique George and Estevao Willian in the half first.
Tolu Arokodare and David Moller scored twice for the hosts, but Jamie Gittens made it 4-2 with a stunning effort.
Moller’s second strike proved to be a mere consolation.
Wolves also had a numerical advantage late on, after Delap was sent off for two yellow cards just 25 minutes after he was introduced into the game.
“Today we had a very stupid red card that was completely unnecessary,” Maresca told the media afterwards.
“A stupid foul. He deserved that.
“It’s embarrassing when it’s a red card like today. Two yellow cards in seven minutes. We can avoid both. It’s not good.
“After the yellow card, I told him four or five times to stay calm. When he is on the pitch, he sometimes plays the game for himself and struggles to see the others around him.”
Delap’s red card means he is suspended for Chelsea’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this Saturday.
