AFCONQ 2025: ‘Warzone’ – Benin receive same treatment as Super Eagles in Libya

by · Daily Post

The captain of the Benin national team, Steve Mounie, has hit out at how Libya treated him and his team-mates during their final game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Gernot Rohr’s men sealed qualification as Group D runners-up, thanks to a 0-0 draw in Tripoli.

They finished level on points with Rwanda, but booked their spot with a better goal difference.

After the game, Libyan supporters disrupted the celebrations of the Benin team, by hurling objects at the players inside Tripoli National Stadium.

Some Libyan security personnel allegedly attacked the team’s bus as they left the stadium, leaving Rohr and several others injured.

Speaking to ORTB, Mounie said: “It wasn’t easy. It was really a war zone. This Libyan team, this country and its supporters didn’t respect us at the start of the match. They whistled our national anthem, and we made it personal.

“We wanted to come out of this match with qualification. We did it with difficulty. Benin is at the CAN 2025. We can be proud of what we have achieved with this group of young players.”

This comes a few weeks after the Super Eagles suffered a similar fate in Libya.

Recall that the Super Eagles’ players and officials were left stranded at the airport after arriving for the matchday four fixture in Libya.
