EPL: Rio Ferdinand laments Man United’s defeat to 10-man Man City, apportions blames

by · Daily Post

Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has slammed Premier League officials following the goal scored by Erling Haaland in the Red Devils’ defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

The former England international contended that the decision was erroneous while also questioning the tactics employed by the Red Devils after they had a one-man advantage.

Phil Foden was sent off by referee Michael Oliver after he intentionally kicked out at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in the 23rd minute of the game, but United could not capitalise on the numerical advantage to create chances.

Rio Ferdinand spoke about Haaland’s goal in a post on X after the match, saying that Man United defender Lisandro Martinez attempted to close down Man City midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position, which he said was the right decision from the defender.

Nevertheless, he expressed surprise that VAR did not recognise it as interference with play, which left Haaland unmarked at the far post.

The Manchester United icon was also irate with the players and the manager, as they did not generate sufficient chances, even with Manchester City reduced to 10 men.

He wrote, “Martinez must defend the player closest to the goal, regardless of whether he thinks he is offside or not. Decisions must be made in split seconds.

“He chose to defend Fernandez, who then attempts to play the ball. This is delusional from VAR! Regardless, United failed to create enough opportunities once City was down to 10 men.”

Erling Haaland netted the only goal of the match, allowing Manchester City to secure all three points at Old Trafford and move joint top of the Premier League table with Arsenal.
