Paul Merson has criticized Chelsea’s strategy during their EFL Cup semi-final second leg match against Arsenal on Tuesday.

He claimed that the Blues went out in a “whimper” instead of taking the game to the hosts despite trailing after the first leg.

The Gunners hosted their London rivals in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Tuesday.

They went into the game 3-2 down after the first leg at Stamford Bridge last month.

Arsenal beat them again 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium.  After the game, Paul Merson criticized Chelsea’s playing style.

He told Sky Sports, “I’m numb, I’m flabbergasted. I can’t believe what I’ve just watched.

“Chelsea Football Club has international players, a World Cup winner, and is not a bottom-five team. This isn’t a bottom-five team. He [Wesley Fofana] is crying, he should be crying because they never had a go.

“They have exited the competition quietly in the semi-final. It hasn’t worked. Go out in a blaze of glory, don’t go out like that,” he added.

The Blues had 55% possession and attempted 11 shots, with two being on target, compared to Arsenal’s six shots, with two on target.
