Troost-Ekong reveals reason for retirement
by Mike Oyebola · Daily PostWilliam Troost-Ekong has revealed the reason behind his decision to retire from international football ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 32-year-old made the announcement via a message on social media on Thursday.
Troost-Ekong was named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the AFCON 2025 finals on Tuesday.
The centre-back has played a bit-part role for the Super Eagles in recent outings and was still expected to lead the team in Morocco.
Troost-Ekong underwent surgery for a hamstring injury last year.
The former Watford star said it was the right time to step aside and allow the new generation to lead.
“Now is the moment for them to claim that,” he says. “The team is ready because we’ve got great leaders,” Troost-Ekong told the Standard.
“I think there is a natural progression and there is an art in knowing when to step away.”
