World Cup 2026: Rudi Garcia names player who helped Belgium eliminate Senegal
by Don Silas · Daily PostBelgium coach, Rudi Garcia, has identified captain, Youri Tielemans as the player who helped his team to eliminate Senegal from the World Cup.
Speaking at his post-match interview after the game, Garcia congratulated Tielemans for sending Belgium to the World Cup Round of 16 stage.
“At 2-2, in the 120th minute or even later, when you’re tired, and Youri was feeling it physically, to go and score that penalty is a difficult task. He succeeded,” Garcia said.
“As a result, he has sent us through to the round of 16. Congratulations to our captain. I think he was outstanding.”
Tielemans’s last-gasp penalty completed an astonishing 3-2 comeback victory over Senegal in the World Cup Round of 32 stage.
Senegal had squandered a two-goal lead to lose against Belgium in the World Cup Round of 32.
Habib Diarra opened the scoring for the West Africans in the 24th minute, before Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead for Pape Thiaw’s side.
However, Belgium fought back to score three, thanks to Tielemans’ brace and Romelu Lukaku’s goal.
