IPL | Do Lucknow Super Giants have the firepower to go the distance?

Rishabh Pant made headlines across the cricketing world when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) went hammer and tongs to acquire his services for a jaw-dropping ₹27 crore at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction a few months ago, setting a new benchmark for player acquisitions.

LSG is now gearing up for what promises to be an exciting campaign under his leadership.

Over the past three seasons, the Lucknow outfit has steadily built a competitive team by blending experience with emerging talent. This combination helped the side reach the playoffs in 2022 and 2023. However, in 2024, things didn’t go as planned for the franchise, as it ended up seventh.

With a revamped squad, the Super Giants will be aiming for a strong start to the season. The team will rely on Mitchell Marsh, who can dismantle any bowling attack on his day, along with the in-form David Miller. Marsh, who is returning from a back injury, is expected to play only as a batter.

Miller was instrumental in the Gujarat Titans’ championship victory in 2022, scoring 481 runs at a strike rate of 142.72. The southpaw will look to replicate his success with the Lucknow side this season.

Aiden Markram is also expected to add significant fire-power to the batting line-up. Additionally, the side will look up to the explosive Nicholas Pooran to provide the final flourish while hoping the domestic players step up when required.

If LSG is to succeed, Ravi Bishnoi will have to play a crucial role this season along with Pant. Bishoni’s fast and sharp googlies, along with his knack for breaking partnerships, will keep the Super Giants in the hunt. He could prove to be a handful not only at home but also while playing away, especially on slow and low surfaces.

Akash Deep, Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, and Shamar Joseph add depth to the pace attack.

With an overall 24-19 win-loss record (54.54%) across 44 matches over three seasons, LSG’s journey has been a roller-coaster. To compete for higher honours this year, the team must take full advantage of the slow and low pitches at its home venue Ekana Stadium.
