Patrick Dorgu to Man United transfer update as Lecce chief reveals meeting discussions

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United's interest in talented young left-back Patrick Dorgu has been confirmed by Lecce president Sticchi Damiani. There is bad news for Ruben Amorim, though, as the Italian club have no plans to let the player go at the moment.

Dorgu has emerged as a serious target for United this window as they seek to add mid-season reinforcements. He is seen widely across Europe as one of the best and most versatile talents around.

The Manchester Evening News understands that initial talks between Lecce and United have taken place but there is nothing close just yet. Dorgu is wanted by a host of sides across the continent.

Damiani has played down the chances of a January transfer, regardless. "We met with Man United and we told them that our plan is to keep our key players, including Patrick Dorgu," he told Sky Sports [via Fabrizio Romano]. "We’re delighted to have Man United here to make a proposal but our target to stay in Serie A is crucial."

Lecce are unsurprisingly not keen to let their jewel leave easily. Dorgu has cemented himself as a serious prospect with immense versatility and technical ability. Already this season he has played in four positions, covering both the left and right-wing as well as cover at full-back on both sides.

United have already added teenage left-back Pedro Leon to their ranks but will not be able to use the Paraguayan until the summer when he is 18. Tyrell Malacia could yet depart the club before the February 3 deadline.

Amorim is still looking to find an answer to his issues at Old Trafford having adjusted his back three system to accommodate for the unnatural profile of Diogo Dalot on the left flank. Luke Shaw remains out whilst Amorim has also tried turning to attackers to fill the role.

Dorgu is seen as a strong option for 2025 whether in this window or over the summer. His contract extension in October 2024 complicates matters as there are still four-and-a-half years left to run on the deal now.
