Amorim, Michel, Alonso - Next Man City manager odds amid Pep Guardiola uncertainty

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola remains one of the most popular managers in the club's history and as such the uncertainty surrounding his future is painful to say the least.

At the end of the campaign, Guardiola's contract expires and at present he has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with the club. To his credit, the City boss has always maintained that he has not yet decided his future but that he will honour his contract.

The only problem is that City fans are concerned this could mean he is preparing to walk away after an unprecedently triumphant stint in Manchester. Strength of feeling among the club's fanbase is high considering what he has achieved.

Guardiola was touched prior to the international break when City supporters paid for a banner in Catalonian which urged him to extend his stay. There was some respite for Blues supporters on Wednesday when England confirmed Thomas Tuchel as their new head coach.

Guardiola had been linked with the Three Lions job and had been sounded out by the FA but his refusal to leave City mid-season ensured the England decision-makers looked elsewhere. But while there is no news of a contract extension, speculation shall persist.

Bookmakers bet365 are currently offering a market on who will be in the dugout at the Etihad Stadium on August 9, 2025 which will likely be the start date of the new campaign. Thankfully from a City perspective, Guardiola is the favourite to be in charge offering odds of evens for him to be in position.

Should he not re-sign though, there are a few options being earmarked as likely alternatives. First is Sporting boss Ruben Amorim who already holds the backing of Guardiola after meeting him in the Champions League.

Next up is Miguel Angel Sanchez Munoz (Michel) who is already part of the City group. He is the current boss of Girona and has earned high praise for his performance last season when he led the Spanish club to a third place finish behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.

They have had a mixed start to the La Liga campaign this year and are yet to get off the mark in the Champions League. Finally, there is former Liverpool man Xabi Alonso who worked wonders at Bayer Leverkusen last year to end Bayern Munich's reign of dominance.

Leverkusen are currently three points behind Munich in the early stages of the season and are flying in the Champions League with two victories under their belt. Take a look at the full list of odds below.
