Man United 'willing' to launch £42.5m summer move as Roy Keane slams current state of play

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United played out a bore 0-0 draw with their rivals Manchester City on Sunday. Ruben Amorim's side registered just two shorts on target at Old Trafford as they had to settle for a share of the spoils.

It was a Manchester derby that won't live long in the memory of supporters young and old as United look to drag themselves over the line, before regrouping for a first summer in the Portuguese's tenure.

United now sit 14 points off the UEFA Conference League places, currently occupied by Pep Guardiola's side, and 18 clear of the drop zone.

Amorim could manage to salvage a torrid season at the Theatre of Dreams with the possibility of progressing in the Europa League. Their quarter-final first-leg takes place on Thursday against Lyon in France.

With all that said, below are the latest media reports surrounding United as well as a view on each one...

Roy Keane takes aim - 'I don't think it's good enough'

Former Man United captain Roy Keane fired criticism at Amorim's side after failing to test Manchester City on Sunday.

It was a difficult afternoon for Rasmus Hojlund, while Joshua Zirkzee was a second-half substitute for United but Ederson's goal was rarely under any severe pressure.

With United sitting in the bottom half of the table, Keane has questioned whether they can push up the division.

He said: "We're talking about next year when he will no doubt get an opportunity to bring players in then we'll be able to judge it better. It's his belief, his philosophy and that's fine, but I like to play for teams where the philosophy is that we like to winning football matches.

"I don't ever remember sitting in dressing rooms with players where we discussed their philosophies, we'd find different ways to play.

"Man United tried to play out from the back and got caught with it, there's times for it, if they were picking up results and scoring goals but they don't, my eyes don't lie to me. I'd like to be proven wrong and United are in the top five or six next season but I don't see it.

"I watched a few live games recently, I watched Forest the other night, I was kicking my cups of tea over, all I hear was, 'they're neat and tidy' but they're never going to score.

"No goals again today, when you're playing for big clubs, big contracts, it's responsibility to win football matches. We're praising Liverpool so much, why?

"They're clinical and win football matches. I'm getting fed up of 'signs of this', signs of what? Getting the odd draw? I don't think it's good enough."

Stephen Killen of the Manchester Evening News says: "Scrutiny is never too far away if you're a Manchester United striker and those in attacking areas know it more than most, especially this season. United have proved in games this season they can be dangerous and they have equally shown signs of how low their performance levels can drop.

"You can see Keane's frustration and Gary Neville's which were sparked by the dire nature of the football match. With the issues that Amorim has faced and the likelihood of a reset in the summer, Sunday's draw was probably an example of ensuring that they can be defensively sound and in future, the attacking threat will return."

United linked with €50million Semenyo switch

According to Fichajes, United are looking to sign Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo in the summer but face competition from Tottenham Hotspur.

The report claims that they are the two clubs prepared to battle for the attacker with both "prepared" to pay £42.5m for his services.

It has been suggested that the 25-year-old believes it is the right time to take the leap from the Cherries and join a big club, with the prospect of United or Spurs an attractive proposition.

Stephen Killen of the Manchester Evening News says:
"Antonine Semenyo has emerged as a quality player in the Premier League in recent season. He has flourished under Andoni Iraola with seven goals and five assists in 30 top-flight appearances the best for goal contributions on the south coast.

He is just one goal off levelling last season's tally but for United this summer, there additions will be heavily scrutinised with the desperation for their current influx to live up to the expectations.

"Already, Amorim needs to strengthen his strike-options with Viktor Gyokeres linked and with the current financial situation at Old Trafford, €50million for the likes of Semenyo would heavily impact future spending, unless they rely upon a sell-to-buy model."
