Bruno Fernandes 'decision made' as Man United plot Matheus Cunha transfer after Amorim bombshell
by Isaac Seelochan · Manchester Evening NewsManchester United have more soul-searching to do after suffering a 17th Premier League defeat of the season in Sunday's 2-0 loss to West Ham.
The Reds have made it abundantly clear that their full focus is now on winning this season's Europa League. Victory in Bilbao on May 21 against Tottenham Hotspur will secure a lucrative place in next season's Champions League.
But Ruben Amorim's side remain some way off where they should be, a fact which Amorim himself has acknowledged. Speaking shortly after their latest defeat at Old Trafford, the former Sporting boss admitted that he may be sacked if United's dreadful league form continues into the 2025/26 campaign.
It is set to be a busy summer at M16, with Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha a prime target. Captain Bruno Fernandes has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, although The Manchester Evening News understands the club has no intention of letting him go there. Below are some of the latest headlines surrounding United, as well as a view on each one...
Fernandes 'decision'
Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson has weighed in on the chances of Bruno Fernandes leaving Manchester United this summer.
“I don’t think it’s a case of renegotiating with Fernandes at his age," Borson told Football Insider. “He’s already on a very big salary. We know what they’re doing to their overall salary cost.
“So, I think it’s much more about whether they just decide they’re going to keep him or if they’re going to take the fee, whatever that fee is from Saudi. I think it’s very unlikely that the fee will be the sort of numbers that have been speculated. They very rarely pay very big fees of the type that’s been rumoured there. Clearly, they paid it for Neymar, which was a disastrous deal.
“There is some speculation they’re going to pay a very big fee for Kudus from West Ham. We will see about that. They paid a reasonably sized fee for Duran, although that’s a different category of deal given his age and given the striker.
“They have paid very big wages but have tended not to pay very big transfer fees, and we’ll have to see whether that changes this summer. But if they weren’t to, then I think that would be the deal dead as far as Fernandes is concerned. I don’t think United would contemplate selling him unless they could get an extraordinarily large fee anyway.”
Isaac Seelochan of The Manchester Evening News says:"It's possible that Fernandes may choose to leave in a year's time when he has just a year left on his contract. If United remain a mess on and off the pitch, that decision is likely to be a lot easier."
Cunha claim
Manchester United reportedly face fresh interest in Matheus Cunha from Arsenal. However, the Reds are said to remain "calm and confident" in their pursuit of the Wolves forward.
GiveMeSport claim that Cunha is keen to join United regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League next season. It is claimed that United hope to accelerate progress on a deal once the Europa League final is out of the way, as this will allow them to give Cunha full clarity, both financially and competitively, on what they are able to offer.
Isaac Seelochan of The Manchester Evening News says:"It's encouraging for United that they still appear to be attractive for players of Cunha's calibre. However, while few can question his talent, there must still be question marks over his temperament and whether he has the character needed to help get United back to the top."
