Travel snow warning issued to Man United supporters as Storm Bert hits UK

Rail users across the United Kingdom have been issued a travel warning after amber and yellow weather warnings were issued in response to Storm Bert.

Manchester United, Manchester City and clubs around the north west are in action this weekend with top-flight football returning following the international break. Ruben Amorim will take charge of his first match as United head coach when they travel to Suffolk to take on Ipswich on Sunday (4pm kick-off).

Fresh from his one-year extension, with the option for a further year, Pep Guardiola will be looking to end a run of four straight defeats when Tottenham Hotspur visit the north west on Saturday evening (5:30pm).

Championship football also returns, following the international break, with Burnley (away at Bristol City), Blackburn Rovers (at home to Portsmouth), Preston North End (at home to Derby County) as well as Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool locking horns on Saturday afternoon (12:30pm kick-off).

Storm Bert has threatened heavy rain and gusts of wind up to 60mph in parts of northern England, while a yellow warning for wind has been issued between 5am and 7pm. As a result, Network Rail have warned that various routes across England, Wales and Scotland have been impacted until Sunday, November 24.

Snow and ice can cause disruption to railway networks as snow could build up on tracks - blocking equipment that allows trains to move between tracks. Ice can prove problematic for overhead cables, preventing them from drawing power they need to run - leaving trains standed.

Rail users have been advised to check their journey before travelling as the journey time may be extended. Speed restrictions may be in place to allow trains to run safely.

Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express customers have been warned not to travel north of Preston and Carlisle respectively, with the warning extended until Sunday by TransPennine. At the time of writing, it is not known what impact Storm Bert will have on passengers in the north of England.

As a result, it shouldn't affect United fans making to the journey to Portman Road unless they are going from further afield.
