‘I love that kid’ - Ruben Amorim reveals which Man United star has made ‘important’ first impression

Ruben Amorim has waxed lyrical about Mason Mount, who seems to have made a positive first impression on the new Manchester United head coach.

Amorim has only presided over a handful of training sessions since his arrival 13 days ago but has been able to involve Mount in each of them over the international break, with the midfielder currently out of the picture for England.

The 25-year-old has only played 26 times for United since his arrival 16 months ago, having been beset by persistent injury problems. He has enjoyed just six appearances this season, having already suffered several setbacks which have caused him to miss 10 games.

Mount returned from his latest issue in the 2-0 Europa League win over PAOK this month, when former interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy brought him on for the final nine minutes.

He subsequently made a Premier League matchday squad for the first time since September during the 3-0 win over Leicester City in Van Nistelrooy’s final game before he was shown the door by Amorim. Mount has yet to play in the league since the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham eight weeks ago.

However, Mount might be set to build on his three Premier League matches this season under Amorim given the coach's recent comments about the playmaker, who has only scored and assisted once for his new club.

Speaking to club media on Friday, Amorim exclaimed: “Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

While at boyhood club Chelsea, Mount was used in a variety of positions including out wide as well as centrally. Amorim - set to use the 3-4-3 formation he employed at Sporting CP - is excited to utilise Mount's versatility.

“He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him,” added Amorim, in relation to Mount's time at Chelsea. “I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”
