David Beckham hires Champions League winner as new Inter Miami manager after sacking Phil Neville
by Will Jenkins · Manchester Evening NewsDavid Beckham has secured a new head coach for his Inter Miami side - and he's a multiple Champions League winner.
Javier Mascherano has agreed to become the new head coach at Inter. One of the most prominent defenders in his playing days, the Argentine is very good friends with Inter captain Lionel Messi.
The two played alongside each other both for their national side, but most prominently at Barcelona. The 40-year-old made 203 appearances for the Spanish club. He and Messi played side by side at Barca for eight years and the pair are the most capped players for Argentina with the forward taking the top spot.
Beckham, a co-owner of the Miami based club, has been an important figure at Inter. His ex-teammate at Manchester United Phil Neville was manager of the MLS side for over two years before getting sacked in 2023. Ultra experienced coach Garardo Martino was their most recent manager.
Now, Mascherano is set to take the lead. The ex-Barcelona player's coaching career only started in 2021 when he was named manager of the Argentina under-20 team. Since then, he has coached his national side at the 2024 Olympics where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals to France.

He joins an Inter side who find themselves in an awkward position. Messi's side were stunned in the opening round of the MLS Cup Playoffs when they were knocked out by Atlanta United 3-2.
Despite this, FIFA have granted a place to Beckham's team in the Club World Cup. This sparked outrage amongst football fans and club owners. In fact, Costa Rican side Alajuelense claimed that they could take legal action if FIFA does not allow them a spot in the competition next year.
Mascherano's experience in football, including Premier League tenures at West Ham and Liverpool, means he is more than prepared to deal with difficult challenges. But Beckham has a clear vision for his club and the Argentine will have to be able to keep up.
