Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as head coach for the remainder of the season. United sacked Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, and the appointment of Carrick to oversee the team for the second half of the campaign was announced on Tuesday.

Carrick returns to Old Trafford to manage the club after a brief spell as caretaker manager in 2021/22 following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure. Carrick oversaw wins against Villarreal and Arsenal, and drew against Chelsea, during his time at the helm. Solskjaer was in contention for the interim role. The Norwegian held discussions with club officials last weekend, but United decided to hire Carrick after interviewing both candidates.

After leaving United, Carrick was named Middlesbrough manager. He guided Boro to the play-offs in 2022/23 but was sacked in June 2025 after eighth and tenth place finishes.

Carrick cannot win a trophy during his second stint as caretaker boss after United crashed out of the FA Cup against Brighton. United were knocked out of the competition at the first opportunity, four months after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup second round by Grimsby Town.

United's defeat in the FA Cup means they will play just 40 games this season, their fewest in a campaign for 111 years. The club's target for the campaign was to secure European football, but Carrick will attempt to steer United back into the Champions League for next season.

Carrick joins United with the team seventh in the Premier League, three points adrift of fourth.
