Ruud van Nistelrooy could make instant return to English football after Man United exit

Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy could be set for a surprise sudden return to English football, according to the latest reports.

The Sun claims the Reds legend remains a possible managerial target for Championship side Burnley having turned down the Clarets in the summer. The Dutch coach was a potential replacement for Vincent Kompany at Turf Moor, but opted against a move to the Championship, becoming assistant to Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Following Ten Hag's dismissal as head coach, Van Nistelrooy took temporary charge of United, winning three and drawing one of his four games in charge. His stock has risen as a result of that stint in charge of the club, with many supporters calling for him to play a part in Ruben Amorim's backroom staff at the club.

However, a United club statement confirmed he'd depart the club earlier this week, which read: "Manchester United can confirm that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club. Ruud rejoined in the summer and has taken charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach.

"Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford.

"Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed and we wish them all well for the future. We will confirm the full men’s first team coaching composition in due course."

Burnley appointed Scott Parker after being snubbed by Van Nistelrooy, who started the 2024/25 campaign in brilliant fashion, thumping Luton Town 4-1 and beating Cardiff City 5-0. However, in the 13 league games since then, they've only managed nine goals in the second tier.

Parker remains in the dugout at Turf Moor and though the report claims he'll likely be given time by Clarets' owner Alan Pace, although Van Nistelrooy remains an option should they continue struggling in front of goal.
