Thomas Frank reveals truth about potentially replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

by · Manchester Evening News

Brentford manager Thomas Frank said "there are a lot of rumours out there" when asked whether there was truth in reports linking him with Manchester United in the summer.

Frank has established Brentford as a Premier League side since their promotion to the top flight in 2021 and has guided the London club to ninth and 13th place finishes in the table.

Brentford have a limited budget but play attractive football and Frank has been praised for his tactical nous, which has helped his side claim the scalp of some of the biggest sides.

United will welcome Brentford to Old Trafford this weekend and they have been tricky opposition in the last two seasons. The game also carries huge importance for Erik ten Hag, who is facing enormous pressure after overseeing the club's worst start to a Premier League campaign.

Despite many predicting Ten Hag would be sacked during the international break, he has survived and will remain in charge for Brentford's visit in the Premier League on Saturday.

Frank was among the managers to be heavily linked with replacing Ten Hag in the summer and his name has continued to be mentioned in conversations about the Dutchman's successor.

The Brentford boss sat down with talkSPORT this week and provided an update on his future, although he refused to be drawn into reports suggesting he could replace Ten Hag.

“There are a lot of rumours out there, you know that with every club, every coach, all kind of situations," Frank said when asked about links to the United job.

"So I have that nice little principle that I never speak about players that are never not in my club because I don’t know them well enough and I never speak about speculations either way."

Although Frank refused to comment on links with United, he admitted to being flattered by the reports and praise. “Again, of course, that’s nice, I can’t neglect that," he said.

"But that’s just a feeling in a moment and it’s just feeding my ego a little bit. We all have an ego, although I don't think mine is the biggest. The ego is part of pushing ourselves forward. Praise is nice, but I'm trying to work hard every day at Brentford and do the right things."

Frank added: "Hopefully we can win up there. We know Man United are a great club, a great team with top players and we know if we aren't on it they will produce a big chance in a second. We believe in ourselves, we think we can go there and win, but they are the big favourites."

Frank is around 6/1 with the bookmakers to replace Ten Hag as United manager.
