Viktor Gyokeres doubts emerge as Man United warned to sell two stars after Ruben Amorim agreement
by Thomas Fair, Manchester Evening News readers · Manchester Evening NewsNew Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim will take the reigns of his first Premier League game on Sunday, with all eyes on how he will reshape the team he has inherited from Erik ten Hag.
One transfer rumour that has followed in his wake is a move for his old club's high-flying striker, Viktor Gyokeres - but some Manchester Evening News readers are cautious about such a move in our comments section.
United's raid on Portuguese club Sporting could continue with an offer for Gyokeres in the future, with the striker showing very impressive numbers this season. He has scored 32 goals in just 24 appearances for club and country this term, outscoring Manchester City's Erling Haaland by some distance already.
However, there is reportedly a "gentleman's agreement" to prevent the Reds from plucking Gyokeres from Sporting in the January transfer window, which would mean that any move would have to wait until the end of the season. Journalist Fabrizio Romano says that Sporting want to ensure that they can challenge for their league title this year, and want to avoid any further shocks that would unsettle the club.

Reader JustifiablySceptical urged caution on Gyokeres: “If Amorim is adamant he wants him, then we should trust him. However, we shouldn't be desperate to sign the guy just because he's been successful with that manager in a weaker league. We know that's not a recipe for guaranteed success. I did think he looks good, but Amorim should be the judge of whether he's the best one for us right now.”
SimplyRed60 writes: “I thought that we should have gone for him when he was at Coventry, as you could see his natural goal scoring ability, so I would support it even more now with Amorim. But we need to get rid of Zirkzee and Antony to fund.”
Hackettboy also knows Gyokeres' capabilities from his previous stint in England: “I’m a Coventry fan, you should have got him for 20 million two seasons ago. He is a rare talent and it would be great to see him back in this country banging in the goals every week.”
Anniemause said: “Now that Murtough and Ten Hag are out of the way, hopefully United will once again adopt a rational recruitment policy. Gyokeres is a no brainer if they can afford him, especially given he has a release clause. United need to snap him up before other clubs come knocking.
"The question then is whether United have the players to service him because they've done a pretty poor job of servicing Hojlund over the last 15 months. Hojlund should not be written off even if Gyokeres is signed.”
Jeffrafferty also has concerns: ”If he gets the same service as Hojlund his stats will drop through the floor. Give Hojlund proper service and he will score a bundle.”
Garth123 added: “The number 9 position in Amorim's set up is perhaps the most important outfield position, as it knits rest of the team together when an attack is being undertaken. So I do think the funds will be found, either by hook or by crook, if the new Head Coach really wants him at the club.”
