Manchester United receive 'key' Matheus Cunha update amid Victor Lindelof 'mistake'
by Bruna Reis · Manchester Evening NewsManchester United will be in Premier League action this Sunday, before all eyes turn to the crunch Europa League semi-final clash with Athletic Club.
After another disappointing domestic campaign, Ruben Amorim's team are looking to succeed in Europe to salvage their season. If they go all the way and lift the trophy, United will secure a place in the Champions League - bringing a significant financial boost.
It was a quiet January transfer window, but after overseeing his first few months in charge, Amorim will now have a clearer idea of which players he wants to keep and who could be moved on.
As he prepares for a summer rebuild, both arrivals and departures are expected.
A number of players continue to be linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams, but the club must remain cautious with their spending, as Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) remain firmly in place.
Here, MEN Sport has taken a look at the latest headlines from in and around Old Trafford.
Matheus Cunha update
The Reds' chiefs continue to work behind the scenes to finalise a deal for the Wolves star. Journalist Ben Jacobs has now offered an update, claiming that United are set for a 'key meeting' next week to discuss the potential transfer.
However, it's also noted that nothing has been agreed so far and financial terms are said to have not even been discussed yet. With that said, MEN Sport understands that sources close to Cunha say the player feels 'optimistic' about a move despite his £62.5million release clause.
MEN Sport says: "It's encouraging to see United begin executing their transfer plans early in a bid to stay ahead of the competition. A meeting is set to take place soon - though it remains unclear whether Wolves' officials will be present.
"Regardless, the club are taking key steps to ensure clarity on what’s required to bring Cunha to Manchester. A player of his calibre can certainly help address some of the team's issues, but it’s important to note he won’t be a fix-all solution and another reinforcement or two will still be necessary."
Victor Lindelof 'mistake'
According to Caught Offside, Victor Lindelof will not be short of options once he leaves Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of June.
Seven clubs are said to be interested in his services, including Everton, Fulham, West Ham and Wolves.
Outside of the Premier League, Juventus, Inter Milan and his former club Benfica are also linked with the centre-back.
MEN Sport says: "With the 30-year-old set to leave on a free, this serves as an example of what Manchester United must aim to avoid doing in the future. As the club looks to raise funds for transfers this summer, any incoming fee would be valuable.
"Given Lindelof’s experience, he would likely have had no shortage of suitors - even if his contract wasn't expiring in June. Had the club extended his deal earlier, United could have reinvested the transfer fee into one or two new reinforcements. It's also understandable why the club chose not to extend his contract, given his age and their focus on building a younger-profile team."
