Man City Champions League play-off opponent as draw throws up glamour tie
by Alex James · Manchester Evening NewsManchester City squeezed into the Champions League play-offs with a comeback victory over Club Brugge on Wednesday night.
City went into the Etihad clash knowing anything other than victory would see them eliminated from the competition at the first hurdle. Pep Guardiola's side went into the contest 25th in the League Phase table with the top 24 progressing.
And things looked bleak for the Blues at the break with the Belgian side ahead courtesy of Raphael Onyedika's drilled effort on the stroke of half time.
But City roared back after the interval with Mateo Kovacic slotting home an equaliser before Josko Gvardiol's cross was turned into his own net by Joel Ordóñez.
That was enough to bump City into the top 24 with the Blues finishing the league phase in 22nd place.
The draw for the play-offs is on Friday but UEFA have already produced something of a path through the competition. City will be paired with Celtic in the draw with those two sides playing either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
That means Guardiola's men will face either a repeat of last season's quarter final against Real Madrid, which the Blues lost on penalties, or German giants Bayern Munich who are managed by City legend Vincent Kompany.
