Darren Ferguson confronted by furious Everton star over brutal Tyler Young snub

Everton's veteran defender Ashley Young was denied the chance to play against his son, Tyler, in Thursday night's 2-0 win over League One Peterborough in the FA Cup

Darren Ferguson says he was called out by an unnamed Everton player after failing to bring on Tyler Young in Peterborough's 2-0 loss in the FA Cup.

The young Peterborough midfielder, 18, would have played against his father, Ashley, had be been introduced from the bench. But the father and son duo did not get to make history as Ferguson instead made other changes in a bid to get his side back into the game.

Young Jr's omission divided opinion on social media - and Ferguson revealed in his post-match interview that it even sparked a backlash from Peterborough's opponents.

"It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench but I've got to do what I think is best for the team," Ferguson said when he was asked why the teenager didn't get on.

"As much as I wanted Tyler to get on, if the game had been 2-0 at that point I would've put him on, but at 1-0, I had to get a forward on. I've got to try and get something out of the game and do what is best for my team.

"One of their players had a pop at me which was bang out of order. We are not a charity case."

Ferguson had addressed the possibility of Ashley and Tyler becoming the first ever father and son to play against each other in FA Cup history in his pre-match press conference, however, the Posh boss did stress that Tyler's involvement would depend on how the game was going.

Speaking in the build-up to Thursday night's match, which Everton won 2-0, Ashley spoke of how playing against Tyler - who had made just one senior appearance prior to the big FA Cup clash - would be top anything and everything else he had experienced in football.

"I’ve said for years that if there was any way we could play against each other, it would be the pinnacle of my career," he told talkSPORT.

"It would eclipse anything I’ve done. When the draw came out, I just couldn’t believe it. I had no words."
