Sunderland came out as 1-0 winners over rivals Newcastle in the Wear-Tyne Derby at the Stadium of Light

Sunderland have celebrated their win against Newcastle United by getting one over their rivals with a team photo. The Black Cats came out as 1-0 winners thanks to a Nick Woltemade own goal.

The win extends Sunderland's unbeaten record against their rivals in the Premier League to 10 games. But it was a long wait for the club's fans to reignite the rivalry with their nearest enemies.

The last league meeting between the two came back in 2016 and ended in a 1-1 draw. Since then, Sunderland have been down to League One, before rising back to the Premier League.

The only other meeting between the two sides in that time came in the FA Cup back in January 2024. That game saw Newcastle come out as 3-0 winners at the Stadium of Light, with the Magpies celebrating after full-time with a squad picture on the pitch in front of the travelling fans.

Sunderland have now taken the chance to get their own back. Shortly after full-time, members of the squad and coaching staff gathered in front of the celebrating fans in the stands for a squad picture of their own.

The moment is likely a dig towards Newcastle and their assistant manager Jason Tindall, who was the instigator of the original picture. Speaking after the original picture, then Sunderland boss Michael Beale said:

"It shows that the game meant a hell of a lot to them. It showed that they came into it and needed a result.

"When you lose a game, you cannot complain about how the other team celebrates because that would be a headline-grabber and that wouldn't be the right thing today."

After a goalless first half at this weekend's encounter at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland were celebrating soon after the restart. Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade completely misjudged his defensive header to put the goal past his own goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

That goal proved to be decisive in the result with Sunderland coming out as 1-0 winners. The win sparked the scenes of celebrations that went on long after the full-time whistle.

It also sees Regis Le Bris' side climb above their rivals and into seventh place in the Premier League table. They have earned 26 points from their 16 games since earning promotion through the play-offs last season.

Newcastle, meanwhile, sit in 12th position in the table. Eddie Howe's side have picked up 22 points from their opening 16 games.
