Jamie Carragher admitted Liverpool were "battered" by Newcastle as they won the Carabao Cup, claiming their first piece of major silverware since 1969.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored the goals as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1, with Federico Chiesa scoring a late consolation for the Reds. And Liverpool legend Carragher felt that Arne Slot's side were lucky not to have conceded more.

"Newcastle didn't just win, they battered Liverpool," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "It should've been three or four nil. Liverpool got a consolation goal. I find it difficult to be too critical, considering what it looked like they were going to achieve this season but not many expected them to.

"Liverpool were poor vs PSG and Newcastle are a good Premier League team but they have wiped the floor with them. Liverpool's legs have run out of steam but luckily for them they have a big enough lead in the league.

"I am gutted Liverpool didn't win but if there was any team you'd want to win, it is probably Newcastle." In the process, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe became the first Englishman to win a major domestic trophy in England since Harry Redknapp's FA Cup triumph with Portsmouth in 2008 and the 47-year-old was delighted with the victory.

"Emotional, very emotional," Howe told Sky Sports after the game. "It is very unlike me. We knew what was at stake and just wanted to do everyone proud. We were desperate to try and win the trophy after so many years of hurt.

"It had a different feel. We have won the game and everything will be reviewed positively but we prepared well and I was very confident the players would perform. We wanted to do the football club proud today.

"We are trying to break new ground and hopefully this is a turning point for us. With set plays, we have worked consistently on certain ones for two weeks for this game. Dan will be the first to admit, he hasn't practiced like that!

"All of the players were magnificent but particularly him. He was a colossus. Both teams were very direct. We dealt with that very well. No-one wanted to make a mistake. There wasn't a lot of pretty football but we were effective."
